29th National Ends on High Note
The 29th National Sports Collectors Convention closed on Sunday August 3 with a solid Family Day crowd. The Family Day activities along with the week-long Kids Free program sponsored by NFLRush.com made for good activity for dealers up to the last hours of the show on Sunday afternoon. Entertained by a professional DJ, face-painters, a balloon artist and even Spiderman himself, attendees enjoyed all aspects of the National. At 2PM several drawings were held and sports memorabilia was awarded to the large crowd gathered in the Family Sports Arena at the National. Exhibitors reported solid sales on late Sunday as the result of the Family Day crowd which was also bolstered by over 50 members of Upper Deck's Diamond Club. Diamond Club members also enjoyed a Meet & Greet photo opportunity with guest signer Bo Jackson earlier in the day.
Tristar's Autograph Pavilion saw heavy activity for the entire week. Appearances by several Super Bowl MVPs including Joe Namath, Bart Starr, Randy White, John Riggins, Franco Harris and Terry Bradshaw created large crowds. Sunday's guests included hockey greats Gordie Howe, Phil and Tony Esposito and Chriss Chelios as well baseball Hall of Famers Whitey Ford, Lou Brock, Rod Carew, Bruce Sutter, Ralph Kiner, Bob Gibson, Stan Musial and Red Schoendienst.
The 30th National Sports Collectors Convention will be held July 29 to August 2, 2009 at the International Exposition Center in Cleveland OH. Sunday - Last Day of 2008 National Daily Herald Family Day
Wow - what a week. The final day of the 2008 National is here already. And what a way to finish! Daily Herald Family Day will allow any family of up to four to attend the National for only $25. There will be live entertainment for the youngsters beginning at 11AM in the Family Sports Arena located in the Corporate Pavilion. At 2PM, there will be free raffle drawings for great memorabilia prizes. Family Day tickets are only available at the Convention Center Box Office.
There will be no shortage of great autograph guests as well. Scheduled to sign are Baseball Hall of Famers Stan Musial, Whitey Ford, Red Schoendienst, Lou Brock, Bob Gibson, Ralph Kiner, Bruce Sutter and Rod Carew. Hockey is well represented by "Mr. Hockey" Gordie Howe plus Phil & Tony Esposito and Chris Chelios. Multi-sport star Bo Jackson will be signing as well as 3000 Hits and Future Hall of Famer Craig Biggio.
Online ticket sales end at midnight Saturday August 2 but if you miss that deadline, come on down to the Convention Center and buy a ticket there. This is your last chance to visit the National Sports Collectors Convention until it comes back to Chicago in 2011.
Saturday's National Autograph Pavilion is a virtual Hall of Fame
As we head into the final two days of the 29th National, the action in the Tristar Autograph Pavilion heats up. Scheduled to appear on Saturday are Joe Namath, Jim Brown, Eric Dickerson, Steve Largent, John Riggins, Lawrence Taylor-the Original LT, Don Maynard, Franco Harris, Jerome Bettis, Jackie Slater, Bart Starr, Terry Bradshaw, Bob Griese YA Tittle, "Mean" Joe Greene, Forrest Gregg, Jack Lambert, Ed "Too Tall" Jones and Notre Dame Coaching Legend Lou Holtz. Heisman Winners Dick Kazmaier and Archie Griffin. From Baseball are Cubs Keystone Combo Don Kessinger and Glenn Beckert.

Steve's a No-Show
A large crowd assembled at 1PM in the Tristar Autograph Pavilion to see if Steve Bartman would be there to sign one autograph for $25,000. Although he did not show up, the crowd was happy when Craig Beckman of Wenonah IL was selected to receive a Meet & Greet with Ryne Sandberg at the National. Craig was one of many people on hand who made a donation to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation at the National. All people who made a contribution of any sized were entered into a drawing and Craig's was the winning ticket.
The National continues on Friday and the Autograph Pavilion will be very busy once again. In addition to Sandberg, several other Chicago favorites will appear. Hockey Greats Bobby Hull and Michel Goulet will sign along with Detroit's Alex Delvecchio.A Green Bay Packers group led by two time Super Bowl MVP Bert Starr and Paul Hornung are scheduled. Also appearing will be Jim Taylor, Willie Davis and Jerry Kramer. Other NFL Greats appearing are Chuck Bednarik, Randy White and George Blanda. Making a rare appearance will be Dan "Rudy" Ruetigger, the inspiration for the movie "Rudy".
Courtesy of NFL Players, two former Bear greats will sign free for kids on Friday. Jim Osborne will sign from 11AM-12:30PM while Keith Van Horne will be signing from 12-1:30PM in the Family Sports Arena located at Booth 555 in the Corporate Pavilion. Sneak Peek Guests treated to Free Autographs - National Invites Families to Daily Herald Family Day on Sunday
The 29th National Sports Collectors Convention opened on Wednesday night with the annual Sneak Peek Night. Guests were treated to free autographs from Sneak Peek signers including Fergie Jenkins, Milt Pappas plus NFL Hall of Famers Roger Wehrli and Jackie Smith.
The National continues on Thursday with a full slate of autographs celebrities appearing in the Tristar Autograph Pavilion. Highlighting Thursday's signers are a number of 1985 Super Bowl Champions Chicago Bears including defensive genius Buddy Ryan. Also scheduled are William Perry, Dan Hampton, Dave Duerson, Steve McMichael, Otis Wilson, Emery Mooreheard, Dennis McKinnon and Keith Van Horne. Dennis Rodman, a key member of the World Champion Bulls in the 1990's will be on hand as well.
The National announced that Sunday August 3 will be Family Day at the National, courtesy of The Daily Herald. A family of 4 will be admitted on Sunday for a flat fee of $25 (one family member must be 16 or under). There will be entertainment and free cards for kids. Everyone who attends on Sunday will receive a raffle ticket for free drawings to be held in the Family Sports Arena (Corporate Booths 555-559) at 2PM on Sunday. JDRF to Benefit at National - Drawing for Ryne Sandberg Meet & Greet
The National Sports Collectors Convention has announced that they will solicit contributions for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation at the National on Thursday, July 31. The $25,000 cash offer for one Steve Bartman autograph expires at 1PM on Thursday. Anyone who makes a contribution to JDRF in the Tristar Autograph Pavilion on Thursday, prior to the 1PM Deadline will receive a drawing ticket. Tristar Productions, host of the 29th National Autograph Pavilion has announced the initial group of guests scheduled to appear at the Chicago National, July 30-August 2, 2008 at the Donald E Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, IL. The guest list includes a large number of Hall of Fame guests as well as signers with a Chicago connection.
Headlining the event will be Chicago Cubs Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg. Joining Ryno will be 4-time NL Batting Champ Bill Madlock. Also appearing from the world of baseball will be the most recent member of the 3000 Hit Club and future Hall of Famer Craig Biggio who will be joined by Hall of Famers Lou Brock and Stan Musial. Former Chicago Blackhawk NHL Hall of Famer Bobby Hull will be on hand to sign for his many fans.
From the NFL attendees will be thrilled to see old friend Buddy Ryan, architect of that great Bears defense from the 1985 Super Bowl Championship.
